Maybe one may apply this to Freedom?

I'm actually doing this in my scenario. Player gets to supreme exit on map, the next level's physics are enhanced. But from my favorite childhood games( geneforge is 1337) I perfer static. It's sorta like cheating. " hey guys ima go kill stuff wit magic so I can level up my swordsmanship!"

That is actually quite a good idea, Cubic. I would like to have it, if it is ever developed for even the basic SDL scenarios (M1,M2,Moo).

Irons tried something like this a while back (or was it wrk? Treellama? ugh, can't remember). It was very annoying after a bit. Not exactly as epic and amazing as others may think. Interesting, however.

If Marathon had RPG functionality, Marathon would be really lame.
>>>GAME START<<< >>>STATS: HP=lvl 1 EXP=lvl 1 >>>Aquired Assault Rifle >>>A Pfhor Trroper approaches >>>USE ITEM: Assault Rifle >>>Player used Assault Rifle. MISS MISS MISS MISS MISS HIT MISS HIT MISS MISS MISS MISS HIT MISS MISS MISS MISS >>>Trooper sustained -3 damage. >>>Trooper LVL 10 used Grenade Launcher HIT HIT HIT >>>Player sustained -3200 damage. >>>Player is dead. |

"Static Leveling (e.g. skill trees, I level up and get points to spend)"
I would place all my points on my fisting skill tree so I could fist through walls and even punch people from afar. "Progressive Leveling (e.g. as I use my gun, I become progressively better at at doing so)" The Assault Rifle would become an SMG with an extended clip, and the SMG would become a rapid fire sniper rifle. Pistols would increase damage so much that they would become one round shot guns. And the shot guns would kill an opponent with only a fraction of the lead fired off, so you could kill around 7 opponents if they lined up in a narrow hallway. The Rocket launcher would become a nuke launcher and the flamethrower would have homing ability. A little over the top, but even if kept practical... ...Newcomers would be screwed. |

Newcomers to co-op TKing?
I think it would be more practical to increase the accuracy and and raise the minimum damage of a projectile (i.e. the AR), as well as speeding up reloads (i.e. the Rocket Launcher) over time. I think it would be best balanced through the course of a scenario so that it's only possible to achieve maximum leveling on +/-2 weapons. edit: I would prefer progressive leveling for Marathon. I guess a Dead Space-esque player improvement system could be cool.
Its only until I thought of it in comparison to that game that I started seeing good things out of this. Enemy count, and enemy individual strength increase each level. Terminals and chance encounters with advanced enemies could provide the foreshadowing required to let the Player make upgrading decisions based on what he is or is about to face. So the player feels smart, and the upgrading has to be done with some form of thought, rather than making the decision simply NOT to upgrade the only way to make a mistake. That in itself takes a lot of thought on how to make this stuff. I wouldn't be up to it even if I knew how to code. |

I like the progressive leveling idea. Though would it be based purely on uses of said weapon or by kills with it? IE, if I waste all my ammo firing into a wall, should I still gain experience? (I say yes, because of target practicing.)
So would it be more damage per bullet, more ammo per clip, more bullets per second? Not sure what things would be leveled here. Still, I appreciate it better than the level trees. While it seems like progressive leveling would eliminate player choice....they are the ones choosing which guns to use. -------------------- |

Well, there are two ways to look at this question.
1) As applied to Marathon (i.e. Aleph One) 2) An independent game, built to be a Marathon RPG game (not necessarily an FPS) Either way you answer is fine. Marathon : Freedom is an incredibly large and complex project (by my standards). It would be impractical (nigh impossible) for me to add some new core fundamentals, such as Networking or an RPG system. I am however fiddling with a just-for-fun personal project where I try to put Marathon sprites into a sort of side-scrolling beat em up (although more focus is on guns) that I plan to test out networking for. It is in an infant state where I can still add new aspects to it. Currently, it has an alpha progressive leveling system. This is not an announcement. EDIT: And by the way, patrick, those are awesome. What are they? Montages or something real? This post has been edited by CubicCircle: Nov 12 2009, 09:37 AM -------------------- |

Some of those montages look very familiar, as if from an old dream, but I can't exactly remember...

Oh great, yet another shitty 'Hey maybe if I add leveling to a shooter, it'll be better' RPG port. Because what the world needs is more games that involve grinding away hundreds of hours of your life - but hey, you get big guns so it has to be good!

Lh'owon, you could just ignore the leveling in game.
