Discuss and unveil current Marathon projects.

Post Oct 19th '06, 23:05

Im working on a Marathon remake. I am using Sauerbraten as its got good grafics and is easy to make good maps with, but im thinking of moving to the Irrlicht engine [MErr] . I've done Arrival (And a bit of Bigger Guns) and modded the engine (Added the fusion pistol and removed the other weapons).

Its still got a l-o-n-g way to go. Anyway enough jabbering, heres some screenys!!!

Looking out at hanger.

New plan, I'm gonna use the Quake 3 engine, I find Sauerbraten a bit limiting... Also, if anybody wants to help, now is the time to sign up.

Have you checked Marathon Arena yet? They seem to be working on porting Marathon Inf rather than Marathon 1 to the Q3 engine, though and it seems they are still in the early stages.

Anyone ever thought of using Unity? I know it's OS X only right now, but it seems like a pretty good game development suite.
Here's the link:

if you are using Q3 then you can try to contact the Marathon Arena guys and get some resources. they have an email address at the bottom of their page.
Its just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. Then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns and also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?

For free ones, check out Nexuiz, or Open Arena.

The unity engine doesn't look that amazing. Valve's source is better (HL2 ftw!). What I'm really looking forward to is the Unreal 3 engine. *drool*

Unfortunately, Marathon Source's progress has ground to a halt due to the fact that we can't get our hands on a good programmer.

The Quake III engine is a little outdated by today's standards. I suggest using a more recent engine like the Doom 3 engine.

Gah! Not the doom3 engine. Its too unrefined! Look at how FEAR's ridiculous requirements and unjustifiably low fps.

FEAR doesn't run on the doom 3 engine. It uses its own custom engine.

My bad visciom, you're right, FEAR has its own engine (though inefficient)

Its too unrefined! Look at FEAR's PREY's ridiculous requirements and unjustifiably low fps.

Just my two cents...

Marathon: Resurrection is almost finished. We have a few more singleplayer levels to go, and then the project is complete (with potential for future updating as possible/desired/necessary). Redoing ~30 levels in even UE1 -era technology can take a long time, so personally I think it'd be a better idea to contribute where it's most likely to see a finished project.

I'd possibly be interested in doing another Marathon: Resurrection project for Unreal Engine 3 (using Unreal Tournament 3, when it comes out), but doing anything on the scale of Marathon/2/Infinity for modern game engines would require serious amounts of talent. The gameplay/coding side of things would likely not be too difficult, given the basis of UT3, but all of the art would need to be redone. That sort of thing's not feasible without lots cooperation between the skilled individuals in the Marathon community.
