Marathon: Syndicate

Discuss and unveil current Marathon projects.

Post Mar 30th '09, 10:57

The Concept:

A long war is raging on a planet between human and pfhor. Between
the two sides is a syndicate. It works in the shadows and uses the conflict
to assert power in political affairs.

By a reason, which cannot be revealed yet, the player is in debt to this dark
organisation. To become a free man he must earn his own worth in money.

The game:

The player performs tasks in the syndicate to advance political affairs
among the humans and pfhor. He'll battle both sides throughout the
scenario, since the syndicate is loyal to neither side.

The scenario uses a very specific level layout. The players starts in a
sort of nexus level where he has access to 8 indepandant levels or level
series. These levels are different missions the player is going to carry out
for the syndicate. Each completed mission will send the player back to the
nexus level where he can pick a new mission.

A lua script that uses items in the players inventory will keep track of
which levels the player has played. When all 8 missions are completed,
a last part of the scenario will be made accessible.

Practically the structure means that the player can choose in which order
he plays the levels. The levels will vary in difficulty, items and monsters to
encourage strategic choices.

The scenario is set in the Rubicon environment.

Will it, in any way, be based on the story or aesthetics of the Syndicate game?
Will it feature new weapons and/or monsters?
A simple yes will suffice if you feel elaborating would be spoiling anything.
Just curious.

It's cool Cubic cirlce, I'll answer your questions. The thing we don't want to spoil is the backstory. E.g. how the player became a part of the syndicate, and how the syndicate began etc etc.

Will it feature new weapons and/or monsters?
The scenario is set in the rubicon environment. It's a complete environment with textures, aliens, sounds, and weapons. No new weapons, aliens etc will be made.

Will it, in any way, be based on the story or aesthetics of the Syndicate game?

Right now - no. In the future - who knows. Everything is still developing and growing. Members have
the opportunity to chime in on the story and influence it (in our forum). If we get a syndicate fan on our team, who knows
what will happen [MLaugh]

I'll underscore, that as a mapper, you have no obligation to take part of the story discussion. It's there for you if you want
to help the team improve it. Like a friggin bonus.

Hm. I'm getting a M:Squadron vibe here...

Lhowon, have you just played M:squadron? [MLaugh]
You were suggesting it for next carnage fest as well.

More coincidence than anything. I do love Squadron's single player, and the whole Rubicon remake involving 2 groups brought it to mind again.

Wow, this is very fascinating. If I wasn't already embroiled in my own war with creativity, I would love to pitch in with some mappings and such.

That having been said, the mission-hub structure seems like something at least basically similar to what I have in mind for Mr. Project DX. The Lua scripting in regards to using items as flags of sorts was one idea I also had. It's just a matter of making it so that the items either fit into the story (ie getting some kind of token for each accomplished mission) or just don't appear in inventory somehow.

Although I cannot make a commitment to mapping, due to my own project and the fact that I have classes starting next week, I would like to join on to this project at least to pitch in some of the ideas I already am working on which may share commonality with this. Plus the story possibilities are just freaking awesome. It's about time someone came up with something like this. I can help out with a myriad of small things which may be needed, with mapping the only real exception due to the fact that I take entirely too long to spit out anything. Under another name, I worked on that submarine xmas collaboration a whiles back (you remember the level with the broken toilet? Reverse Osmosis or something like that.) and it took for freaking ever just because I wasn't satisfied with one thing or another. I admit it turned out alright, but only because of the way it got fit into the story.

Zero, or something involving that number. It's a common handle, and then again I tend to go through handles like shit through a goose.

Edit
Wow, that really was a long time ago. I dug around in my old folders to see if I still had some of the copies I made during development (in case some voodoo corrupted the files while I was working on them) and sure enough I did. Nostalgia is attached:

Welcome to the team, CryoS, the thug, and Kurinn!

@Kurinn
I'm putting you on the team as a mapper Kurinn. This project has a much longer time-span than xmas (no deadline). Perhaps you'll find the time in the coming months. We'll see how it turns out.

Well, during that xmas sub project, I kind of made time out of thin air anyway, so any map I get started on will get finished, anyway.

Do you think we can put in a bathroom somewhere? Heh.

As a second to Meta, I'm in no way a mapper, but I'm a decent story guy. More syntax and grammar in my case, but I do like writing and have dabbled in a few stories in the past. Send me a PM, or hit me up on hl.bungie.org.

Well we can definitely use someone for the terminals since neither me nor goran are native english speakers.

Please don't let your inability to make great maps hold you back from making maps at all, though. You don't learn by waiting and even if your map turned out to be really bad, we can always say what needs improvement. Just join in if you want to.

I'm glad to hear you say that, Drictelt. I'd been debating a similar offer to Meta and Lh'owon's, but I'd really like to map. If you're taking entry level mappers I'll apply. I'm sure I could help with terminal text and / or the story at some point if need be; a little with grammar, but mostly with consistent tone and dialog (I've noticed some 3rd party scenarios I've played seem to have trouble with that).

Effigy, Lhowon and meta, welcome to the team. Listen to Drictelt's wise words.
I think all of you can make maps. IMO beginners sometimes make the most
interresting levels.

As far as mapping, it's more because A.) I don't have time, B.) I can't seem to get Basilisk II to work, C.) Never mapped, and am too lazy to use my slow eMac with Classic, or setup my whole G3 again.

I can write on the fly though (I spend all of my time writing papers now anyways.).
