Marathon: The Legend

Discuss and unveil current Marathon projects.

Post Jun 21st '10, 20:42

PRELIMINARY NOTES:
I am NOT cancelling Motherland, I am merely putting a delay on it untill I can get a solid Dev team up and running.

The Legend (originally entitled "Another Point of View" then retitled "The Siege") is essentially Marathon 1 from a different security guard's POV. The differences between he (who needs a name) and the Cyborg, are:

1.You die faster (not by much, mind you)
2.Your access to firearms is increased by a LOT
3.you get caught in the middle of the first Pfhor boarding wave
4.your contact to the handy-dandy AI's is reduced
5.when YOU get on the pfhor ship, it's not at your own will.

No, this is not a straight up port, as it involves a lot of very different plot elements, in Marathon, you were pretty much cut off from the human element on the ship, and had only the AI's to work with, whereas in Legend, you are recieving most of your intel from Cpt. Stefan and Adm. Grendel.

The Pfhor Mastermind and Minions are now incorporated into gameplay.

Weapons include:

Fists (which will finally be improved in design and power)
44 MMC
MA 75 Assault rifle
Performa Combat Shotgun
Alien Scattergun
Zeus Class Fusion Pistol
Wave Motion Cannon
KKV-6 9mm Shrapnelizing SMG (I will explain this title if you wish)
Havok Rifle ----------OR---------- Flamethrower

Heheh.... Blue shift was a big inspiration in the plot, but it isn't really like Blueshift at all, past the most basic plot element.

It sounds cool though.

You know what: begin small.

You could make a map pack of about 2-5 maps, using all M1A1 shapes, physics etc. The advantage of this is that you can handle it alone, so you don't have to wait and beg for helpers. I don't think many helpers will show up, since most creative people around have their own plans.
Eternal - Xmas I - Xmas II - Xmas III - Victory Dance IV - Winter I: The Venom - KTA III - Phoenix - somewhere in the heavens, waiting: The Syndicate

This. No one with any real talent will want to help with a project when you haven't even shown to put much effort into it yourself. Finish something on your own to show you're actually capable of leading a project, and you might find that some people are actually willing to help. Even then, though, the best way to get something done is usually to learn to do it yourself.

You guys are crazy. He's already come up with three titles, outlined the story, and worked out the weapons balance. All of the hard work is done. The maps can just be reused from M1A1, and all of the sound and music is complete. The only thing missing is a title screen, and a list of positions available. Let me suggest the following positions;
  • Lead Title Screen Artist
  • Lead Atque Merging Engineer
  • Assistant Atque Engineers
  • Senior Lua Programmer
  • Chief Evangelist, Hotline and VersionTracker Uploader
  • Simplici7y.com Copy Editor
  • Lead Screenshot Artist
  • Senior Physicist, Consulting
  • Assistant Anvil Engineers
  • Weapons (placement) Expert
  • Total Carnage Tester
  • Mac OS 9 .SIT Compressor
  • IMG Media Liaison

Or you could join one of the many other scenarios in progress to prove that you have what it takes to create completed content. You need to earn a reputation before asking others to help you. Thus far you have "begun" two projects and already put one on hiatus.

When I think of this scenario's beginning. I think of what it would be like to play through all the levels in ID's DOOM 3 if the demonic invasion simply didn't happen.

Playing all the M1A1 levels isn't a bad idea either. Have them played backwards and it'll feel like a whole new game.

I am not remaking all of the maps, though I may do this treatment for some.

It seemed pretty sincere, so we may never know.

Only a few levels from M1 stand out enough to be re-done, plus the goal is not re-tell the story, or tell an unrelated story, it is to tell a story tied to another by consequence.

A few of the cool plot elements i am employing:

-Tycho
-Tycho manipulating you to chase after the "player" from M1, leading you to believe that the fight is easy and can be won while blindfolded.
-Robert Blake.
-Admiral Grendel and an unfortunate accident leading to his "demise" ps: Grendel Lives. (but you already knew that)
-The captain of the marathon interacting with the player.
-Better "space" sim, allowing flying through space OUT OF THE PFHOR SHIP (picture THAT in action)
-An adventure on Tau Ceti itself.
-More enemy variety
-More BOB variety
-Scope zoom on specific weapons (Script courtesy of Irons)

I planned these to not be too ambitious, but be new and cool features.

Although I am intrigued, it would be heresy to try and equal the awesomeness of Return to Marathon. :)

Return to Marathon v1.0, is an uncompleted TC for infinity. This text
which I found on Inside Mac Games tells it best.

Revisit the Marathon, 184 years after you saw it last. Explore
familiar areas, but beware new dangers! Things have gone horribly,
horribly wrong after UESC abandonment... and it's up to you to
sort them out.

Wander through three enormous levels - large parts will be
familiar, some parts will not. Remember that this is a deserted,
derelict moon - there are pitfalls and hazards at every turn. The
obsolete air recycling system has begun to break down without
maintenance... there are times you'll be scrambling for an oxygen
recharger. Things have taken up residence in once-pristine
hallways - and very, very few of them are friendly.

Go back to where it all began, and experience the thrill of
discovery all over again.

Well, that's a very different thing altogether, and I am not trying to commit heresy, but I intend to deliver some serious fun.
