For some reason, my mom believes that you can get viruses from Youtube by watching certain videos. It's starting to bug me, because I'm pretty sure you can't. The thing is, I don't have proof, and I'm not 100% sure. So, the question is: Is it even remotely possible to get a virus from Youtube by watching a video? If true, what are the chances of coming across said video with a virus?

I am pretty sure that it isn't, and even if there were a way, youtube is pretty strict about illicit/illegal/questionable content; it would be removed immediately.

...I think.

While it may be possible for a nefarious soul to inject malicious content onto YouTube, the chances of such a thing happening are rather slim. Google has a firm grasp on the content allowed to be uploaded and would probably get wind of such content and delete it in a rapid manner.

The bigger problem issue is users visiting websites that they THINK are YouTube or clicking links in e-mails they receive that appear to link to YouTube but really do not.

What he said. Also, keep your anti-virus software up to date.

Well porn can be found on youtube, which means that youtube technically qualifies as a porn site, which means it gives you viruses.Image
