Was going to be the next big thing in the 1980's/early 1990's just before the net/dial up took off.
Lots of tech TV shows with VR gear and line art like worlds or more complex worlds.
Usually some bike or other "hold on" set up for the user to keep their position fixed.

After tests maybe they found out a non trivial number of users would get 'lost' and fall over, walk around.
With a wii, at worst you need a new display. What would a VR mishap be like on the news with your brand/logo ?
In small spaces with no friends or silly friends that could be very bad news.
Where some people sick?

Then came the rush for 3d game, networking, webcams ect.

Or all the tech "sold out" to the military and with no toy or OS backer it slipped away?
Did VR code and eye interface need a unique skill set?

Now we have the rush to upgrade all for 3d glasses. But its not the same rush as true VR :)

Some legal news about the use of 3-D TV

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/techno...article1544226/

"Be very careful. If you start to feel dizzy, stop watching"
"if you are in bad physical condition, need sleep or have been drinking alcohol.?"

Would not be great PR for a VR start up to face?
