Game Closes Immediately When Using Pattern Buffer

Windows 10
AMD Radeon R9 M200X, radeon-crimson-15.12-minimalsetup
Marathon, version from 6/20/2015
OpenGL ( Classic )

Playing on the first level, arrival, I made my way to the pattern buffer, which I'm informed functions as a save point. When I press tab facing it, the screen fades to black and the game quits.

Error log reads: Unhandled exception: boost::filesystem::unique_path: Key not valid for use in specified state (shell.cpp:381)

This topic might be of help, Hopper's idea solved this problem for at least one security officer.
I just play 'em; I don't know how they work.
