Depth sampler for shader plugins?

Does anyone know if there is a 2D sampler for the depth buffer exposed to shader plugins? In the default shaders, I only see a plain frame buffer and another that looks like screens-space normals.

I know that there is a fog depth value I can access per fragment, but that is not helpful because I want to implement a sample kernel using depth data.

(For context, I want this to do screen-space ambient occlusion.)
