Am I allowed to do so and how is it done? I want to make a new engine from its renderer.

In short, you're free to modify the code as you see fit, as long as you share the modifications to the code you've made, and as long as you make sure to clarify that you've made modifications, and that it's a separate project from the OG project it's borrowing from.

You mean share the source code when the engine's done? I think I can't have use of it if so. Unless someone's wiling to port it to a system that I ask them to.

You can port it to whatever system you want if you know how it works.

Study portal rendering.

Doom 3 and Aleph One are good examples of portal rendering.

It's possible you could create something original.
