Which none of the Infinity textures do! So I don't understand how it could have been a problem when Infinity came out.

The engine assumes textures repeat, so when they don't you will notice problems. At high resolutions, I assumed this would be mitigated to a high degree, so that perhaps telling Aorta to mirror the image when generating mipmaps might make them unnoticeable. If that works sufficiently well, then discussion about how to tell the engine textures don't repeat would be unnecessary. I'm still waiting to hear the results from Kurinn.
