2D. Layered shapes with shading. I started with a fighter too, but it is a lot harder than the drone, obviously.

I looked at the M2 highres monsters today. Why on earth are they so low res? Almost same resolution as the originals. 20% larger maybe.

Originally there was a 150 MB limit on Xbox 360 Live Arcade games. Marathon: Durandal comes in at just under that. There were probably VRAM concerns too, the 360 doesn't have a very good GPU.

True. One monster is like a walking texture set. lol. What do you think is a good resolution for monsters? 1x, 2x, or 4x the original size?

I have been thinking if it is possible to replace monsters with 3d models. Would this require less VRAM than 2-4x res sprites?

  • Yes, you can replace monsters with 3D models.
  • spnkrghol's work may still be the best precedent for people interested in doing that. His webpage is here.
  • Yes, a 3D model can definitely save VRAM over higher-res sprites.
  • Back on EMR, I estimated doing 2x res sprites for just the complete player collection would take 3 MB of space.
  • 1x replacement sprites wouldn't be worth it in my opinion. All you're getting at that point is greater color depth.
  • There's something ironic about taking the drone, which was modeled in 3D for Marathon 2, and drawing it from scratch in 2D.
  • You may want to shunt this to its own thread.

I'm only dabbling with it so far. The Drone would look much better in 3d....if one has the skills to create it. Hehe, I do not. This scenery item is pretty much where my 3d skills are at - newbie.

Cool! Maybe when this 3D stuff comes out, maybe I'll actually use it.

That looks great.

Except I have a problem with the repeating blood stains. I mean in the middle. But maybe that's just me.

But the stains at the bottom, that look more like rust, those are fine. You don't notice a pattern so much. Smae with the... err... (that's S'pht, right?) script. I don't think it matters if that repeats.

That's just my opinion.

Could you post a comparison from the old version? They look good to me, but I can't see the difference without looking at the two to compare.

The set is close to being finished. 2 textures left....and not very hard ones either. I think I will just finish it and let you guys judge it afterwards.

Nah. I am just playing around, getting practice with my drawing the tablet before I begin the sewage set. It got a lot of slime which probably need to be hand drawn.
