How does OOB work?

This question is not exactly for just Aleph One, since it can happen on the original Win and Mac executables.

So I and a few others have noticed that you can actually go out of bounds in the engine. There is this clip from a stream I did last night that shows OOB in progress.

From what I can gather, it seems like going fast and hitting the wall at a weird angle(or just pushing the wall with momentum) seems to phase the player's hitbox through the wall, which then shoots it up to the next highest platform.

How exactly though does this work in a technical standpoint?
