Re: AO Project: Blue Fingers

Crater: I believe you can save the game at any time using Ctrl+S. Regarding translation of level transition screens, the only reasonable thing that comes to mind is to use some form of subtitling, i.e. adding English translation in a smaller, different font that is easy to read. And again, good effo...

Re: AO Project: Blue Fingers

Thanks for the all the effort, Crater Creator. I would definitely like to give it a run when the translation effort is done. Loading screens would be helpful. They seem to communicate information about how the game mechanics work. But it's probably nontrivial to replace the Dutch with English bitmap...

Re: AO Project: Blue Fingers

Thanks Zott for the download. [MUp] I played it for a few minutes and enjoyed the immersive environment and beautiful textures, but not knowing Dutch kinda sucks. Has anyone found a better solution than splitting the map file with Atque, and keeping the terminal text and Google Translate handy while...

Re: Why does Marathon a small map size limit?

Probably most of what you said is true, although I think a typical Doom level would certainly fit in a 64 x 64 WU box. See this reference . Also, you probably have done so already, but have you checked out Phoenix's levels? They certainly seem bigger than any Doom map. slower player speed and game p...

This one gets me every time. There is a lift here that is very hard to see. Take it.

Here is the same place with the overlay map.

Re: Grendel is Not Dead

When you are in the middle of a difficult part of the project, it is extremely tempting to take your mind off it and work on something easy. This is OK if you do it in a disciplined manner, i.e. commit to return to the difficult part after a fixed, short amount of time. But often we can get sidetrac...

Re: Marathon : Phoenix Walkthrough

I assume you are talking about "S'phtstorm", one of my favorite levels in Phoenix. I believe you insert the chip in the far west part of the map, where there are three big doors leading to a computer room. There was a very nice Phoenix Walkthrough on Simplic7y almost a year ago. I think Ryoko remove...

Re: Grendel is Not Dead

I think dream levels would be OK if they had some reasonable combat. Unforunately, most of them have either no combat, or combat that isn't very fun. The point of a dream level is to introduce something unusual or weird, something that spices up a mix of levels. Since most of time Marathon seems to ...

Re: Hi-res M1A1 weapons

Much better pistol! [MUp] As in the review I made on Simplic7y, the graphics for the alien gun and the napalm take up way too much of the player's view. The machine gun graphic is also a bit large. For a person like me, HD weapon graphics are cool, but it sort of defeats the purpose if they obscure ...

Re: Enhanced HUD for Eternal X

I've attached a revised version of the XBLA HUD for Eternal X, this time with the layout of the dual fusion pistol interface being slightly less ugly. Of course, don't let this minor detail detract you from trying this thing out. If you are a person like me, the full-screen HUD greatly improves your...

Re: Rubicon X: Gators of NY -> Hex Level 73

Even with a few minor mistakes, the video shows reasonably good playing skills (on Normal, I presume). Have you thought about vidding other levels, perhaps on TC? Regarding the commentary, something that explains not only that "this is important", but rather why it is important would be more helpful.

OK! Thanks Forrest for the universal permission for others to work on this stuff. I hope we get to see Eternal evolve to greatness. Forrest, thanks for the detailed reply. The new HUD you designed and Hopper implemented seems very cool---certainly far above my efforts of just modifying the XBLA HUD. Enhanced HUD for Eternal X

Background: I was playing Marathon Phoenix and got frustrated with "Into Sandy's City" (beat the level on TC, only to die before the save at "Escape 2000"), so I decided to change pace and try a little of Eternal X. Unfortunately, my obsessive tendencies got the better of me, and I could not stand h...

Re: What is your favorite weapon from each Marathon game?

My opinions are similar to Sylith: For M2 and Infinity, shotguns and rockets. They have the ridiculous knockback, and are the most satisfying to use. Runner up is the SMG. It doesn't get much use in the original game because of the low 8 clip limit on sub-TC difficulty levels, but it's extremely dea...

I was a bit thrown off by your use of the word "canon". As far as I know, anything in the original Marathon trilogy is considered canon, and anything outside is not.

Anyway, take a look at this link, if you haven't seen it already
