Re: Aleph One on Mobile Devices

You could try it yourself, with Marathon 2 for Windows 95. There's an ISO and serial number generator at the bottom of this page: http://trilogyrelease.bungie.org/ Post a video if you get it working! I was just sorta speaking hypothetically. I don't think my phone would even be able to handle that ...

Re: Aleph One on Mobile Devices

This idea kinda got inspired from me recently getting both BOOM and System Shock 1 to run on android... Since the source is available, couldn't one potentially compile A1 against Windows 95 and then run it via DosBox Turbo like the hacky way some folks are running half life 1 on android? I mean, I k...

Re: Favorite Marathon weapon

Gotta say the original Marathon pistol. A revolver that loads through a detatchable box magazine. I thought it was the weirdest thing and was simply a case of Bungie making a mistake...then I discovered the Landstad 1900... http://www.forgottenweapons.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/landstad-color.pn...

Re: Re:

That's only because ZDoom uses a larger range, the effect is all the same. Huh, never noticed that, but now that you mention it, maybe that's why Marathon feels (appropriately, considering its setting on cramped spacecraft and tight tunnelly ruins) more claustrophobic. It doesn't bother me too much...

Re: Terminals

Also, I'm not so sure the space program comparison is accurate. Yes, Russia's is still functional and they still use primititve tech, but the reason NASA isn't doing well is because of the internal politics of the US. Our politicians would rather gut funding for the advancement of mankind for the s...

Re:

You can, for instance, freely look up/down in ZDoom, which our renderers don't support. This is actually somewhat untrue. In ZDoom, you have a software renderer that uses "y-shearing", similar to A1's software renderer. You have limits as to how high or low you can pitch up or down...and to be hone...

It appears that I've never formally introduced myself...

Well, hello then. These intro posts always confound me as to what to say, but whatever. I guess the topic would be marathon? Right, marathon. I've been playing marathon since perhaps about 2004 or 2005, and although that's a good decade after the game came out, it was one of the first non-console ga...

Re: Terminals

I think terminals on the marathon...and even in pfhor military vessels...make sense. Think about it: you're not designing a pleasure transport for taking ueg personelle to mars and back with a projected service life of ~20 years...you're designing a colony ship that has to take not only its crew, bu...

Re: Why does Marathon have a small map size limit?

Just to kinda give some perspective on Doom map sizes: Let's assume 32 doom map units equal 1 meter (with aspect ratio corrections, 1DWU really is around 0.75m, but meh). Doom's vanilla engine is limited by 2 things: >the blockmap >visplanes The blockmap is a datastructure that contains info on line...

Re: map reality

My opinion on realism: does it have gameplay functionality? For example, when I first started making maps for games (specifically, UT99, Postal 2 and Cube2: sauerbraten), I tried making meticulously realistic maps based on real-world locations; office complexes, trade-school dorms, etc. I'd spend ho...
