AOE II is a great game, but does anyone know if the mac version can battle against the PC version over a non-lan network (like the internet)?

It is. And can. [windoze] The expansion was awesome, but Mythology and AOE 3 kinda sucked. 'Cept the mythology part. AOE 1&2 helped me pass numerous history exams. [MWuh]

If the netcode for aoe1 mac wasnt shit it would be really good. Nothing was more fun than power-ageing to iron age and thrashing a guy still in the tool age.
Aoe was the same. Boom to the best units and kill everybody.

AoM was decent. The expansion was dumb though.

AoE1 egyptians with full upgrade priests were rediculously strong.

It can't. The netcode is most likely slightly different on the mac version.
Does Age of Empires II for the Macintosh support multiplayer gaming with players on Windows-compatible PCs?

Answer: Unfortunately, we are unable to offer support for cross-platform, multiplayer gaming at this time. However, players can log onto http://www.gameranger.com to compete in multiplayer scenarios with other Mac users on the Internet. LAN multiplayer gaming is supported between Macs using TCP/IP.

Heh, I still remember the first game of AOE I I played. The half-naked villagers carrying man-sized steaks above their heads had me floored laughing. The idea of Ensemble and Bungie working together completely blew my mind.

Some time ago, GameRanger acquired the ATCP/IP (Apple TCP/IP) patent. Ever since then, it has been illegal for any Mac game requiring TCP to use an online service other than GameRanger. Aleph One got around this by including a commented-out GameRanger class (roughly 5,000 lines of code that aren't used at all) and using MariusNet as a "private data collection" server. It has worked so far, but every now and then Treellama gets an e-mail asking why GR isn't 100% implemented yet.

Why exactly would apple allow some idiot in Australia to ruin mac gaming by selling it's patent or not renewing it or something? Rediculous.

Have you tried? The game making system is different, its not how old the game is, its the way you set up games to play online. You can't anymore, when you try to, it redirects you to a website that has a message that says "The AoE 2 gaming service is no longer available" which means you can't play it anymore.

Has anyone complained to Apple about GR? And that he has Mac-Specific spyware that he's using?

Apple won't listen. They sold ATCP to GR. Why would they listen now?
