Hey guys, I was just perusing this forum the other night and saw a lot of 3D modeling happening in here. It got me inspired to do something of my own. I stumbled upon Niklas Jansson's little Marathon Trilogy page and spotted the M.A.D.D. at the top and it looked fun.

Here's his rendition of the M.A.D.D. (which I discovered later wasn't all that true to the original)

Here's my work in progress.

Looks quite good to me.

I do enjoy Jansson's style but would like to see his designs in more realistic proportions.

How adorable! I totally want to feed that to a 3D printer and have the little guy guarding my desk. I was never a big fan of the original M.A.D.D. design, so the lack of authenticity doesn't bother me at all.

As always, Jansson's page makes me yearn for some sort of Marathon-Viewtiful Joe mashup game.

I would love to commission him to make some awe-inspiring concept artist recreations of a few Marathon items. Mainly the weapons. I'd model those in a heartbeat. I can't get anything good done without a concept first though.

Here's an update on the high poly. I might take it into Zbrush when I regain access to my desktop.

reminds me of the crappy helper robots in doom 3. Oh my garg, why didn't I realize it was a ripoff of M.A.D.D. until now?

I'm impressed. You got all the details from the sketch. Are you equally good with texturing?

It's quite possibly the cutest armed robot I've ever seen.

Texturing will come when I get the time to do it. Just got a new project for work so it could be a week or so.

Hey TychoVII, you know those flies in Marathon 1? Fire dirt and what not?

What if you remodeled them to be a robot with blades for legs and epquiped with a blaster? Could you please do that? A patrol drone would make much more sense than a giant fly.

I'm pretty sure wasps make sense.

It's spelled "a lot" by the way.

Wasps make about as much sense as a race of humanoid insects with varying numbers of eyes, which is why there's absolutely no reason to replace them.

Finally got around to finishing the textures up. I tried to stay as true as I could to the original sprite regarding color scheme.

These shots were rendered straight out of the Unreal Engine. I might go back and tweak a few things, other than that it feels pretty done.

Wow, that is quite nice. I did like the M.A.D.D.s in Marathon and thought much of them, and saying that, I'm very glad someone made a remake of them.

Just today I came upon a cool trick that lets Unreal render its normal maps a lot more cleanly and there were a few parts that really needed it. I also updated my UDK build from March 2010 to August 2011 and it seems to handle lighting a lot better. Other than that I tweaked a few other things in the material and added a cube map for fancy reflections, but you can't really see them very well in the screenshots. I also added some surface bump detail where the nicks and scrapes are. I think it's finished.

I might render out a turn table later.
