If one guy managed to play a game you hosted, you're set up correctly. If others drop, your ISP sucks.

Because when I try to host, it pretends to work fine until I actually start the game ? then it hangs on the black screen until everyone drops out and I find myself alone in the map. Except that yesterday one guy actually hung on somehow and we had a good netgame. But normally everyone times out. It's very strange.
It's often a single player that causes the game to hang at the start for whatever reason. Try eliminating players one at a time until you find the person who is causing the problem and then just don't gather them in the future.

If you can get everyone to hang around for a minute or two during the black screen the game should eventually start anyway. You should see a notice at the top of the screen announcing which player became disconnected. If it's the same player who always disconnects at the start of the game, you've found the problem. Don't gather them. Just be careful not to blacklist people if multiple people disconnect at the start because some of them probably gave up and manually quit.

In my experience, the black screen is caused by the load time associated with someone using lots of replacement textures. Maybe you should tell everyone to switch to software mode before joining.

Hmm, here's an update. I found the setting in my router for UPnP and turned it on. Now, when I gather, I can check the UPnP box. When I do this, and start to gather, there's about a 2/3 chance that it will say "unable to open ports" or something similar. If it says that, then upon starting the hosted game, the above problem will happen where everyone times out. BUT, if I immediately back out of the gathering stage before anyone joins, and try again, then again, it usually works. Whenever it doesn't give me an error, the hosting always works fine. Sometimes it's one try, sometimes two, sometimes three. So, go figure. But at least I found a kind of solution. Due to this evidence, I don't think it was anyone else who was messing me up. Maybe my modem is crappy. At least when it works, it works.

Iritscen, if you're on AT&T/Bellsouth DSL (as you are), just give up. I have similar quality of service issues and they haven't gone away in the year+ that I've used that horrid ISP :C

It turns out I was wrong all those months ago when I posted instructions to test your connection speed via websites like speakeasy.net. I also recently learned an easy way to manually update the connection speed indication during a game. After typing in "\.ping" as a host, you can use the "]" key to update the connection information as often as you like. Just keep tapping that key to get a better idea of what your connection speed really is.

I'm creating a new topic titled How to Test Connection Speed and Customize Latency Tolerance to cover these points in greater detail, as well as go over other related information that I've recently discovered.

Shut up, really. He was thanking someone for making a topic which he found useful, and if you really find this so horribly offensive then you could simply ask him politely not to necropost instead of making a dick out of yourself.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I don't endorse necroposting, but there are also better ways of pointing out the fact that someone has necroposted, especially when they're new to a forum and have no history of it.

Shut up, really. I was just joking. Zeta's too fuzzy for me to insult him.

Regardless, backhanded sarcasm is not the greatest way to tell someone to stop necroposting, and your first post didn't come off as "joking". My reply was rather rash as well, but I was rather dismayed to see such a new member greeted with that sort of response, regardless of whether or not you were joking.

Bit he's so fuzzy! It's hard not to be cruelly sardonic around him.

what im saying is that i hadnt posted in this topic until he accused me of posting here. And he's blaming all this off topic discussion in this topic on me. I guess I am going off topic now, but, as the children say, "He started it!"

And what he's saying is "you should really use infinity's if you wanna just reply to everything people say." which is still true regardless of whether this thread was yet a victim of your inevitable inanity.

You don't have to reply to everything! Consider every post, and think "Is my post useful, interesting, or funny?"

I wonder whether, following that advice, you'd have any posts.

This is still not the topic to do this in. what would be appropriate would be to lock this topic and sticky it.

Opening router ports is only necessary for hosting on the Internet.
