I've been logging activity on mariusnet for a while now, and I figured some of you might be interested to see what types of games are hosted the most.

I created these statistics based on games for the month of December (12th - 31st). I don't leave my computer on all the time, so it's certainly not a complete representation of what happened during this time, but it's based on 1281 games, so it's a pretty decent sample size.

Here are the top 25 most hosted maps. (285 different maps total were hosted during this time).

4.294% - Werefrog
3.279% - CFA 3000
3.123% - Duality
2.810% - [XL] Infinite Rhapsody
2.732% - Arrival
2.186% - Mars Needs Women
1.952% - Beyond Thunderdome
1.717% - Melatonin
1.639% - [L] Sands Serif
1.483% - [L] Kingdom of Cydonia
1.405% - [M] No Disintegrations
1.405% - Wrath No More?
1.327% - Waterloo Waterpark
1.327% - [M] Duality
1.249% - Holiday Showdown
1.171% - [L] Beyond Thunderdome
1.093% - Prelude to Empire
1.015% - YYZ
1.015% - Ne Cede Malis
0.937% - Desperate Measures
0.937% - Carnage Heights
0.937% - city of daggers
0.859% - [M] Grave Danger
0.859% - [M] Slaughter In Effect
0.859% - [L] The Downfall of Paradise

Gametypes:
71.273% - EMFH
21.189% - Co-op
5.360% - KOTH
1.005% - Tag
0.586% - CTF
0.586% - KTMWTB

I also have stats for players (who's on the most, [acronym="ect is the fun part"]etc[/acronym]), but since people like to change their names all the time, I don't think those stats are useful. Anyway, I hope someone finds this stuff interesting.

Hmm Werefrog.... I can't say I've knowingly played on that man, of course, I played little Marathon through most of December so that's probably why it is unknown to me(By name)

I'm surprised KTMWTB was loser than Tag, and so was CTF... though EMFH was no great wonder to uncover as being the most played. Nice to see people play Co-op though.

You might as well post the player info, since it might be interesting to see, especially if people don't change their name. Also it doesn't seem readily available elsewhere (to my knowledge) so it isn't like we can find that information out for ourselves.

Yeah, I've played very little lately also.

How do you do this? Are you part of mariusnet, or something? Or do you do it tediously by hand? Or do you write an add-on to some existing widgets?

he probably has a version mnet viewer recording it
Its just like the story of the grasshopper and the octopus. All year long the grasshopper kept burying acorns for winter while the octopus mooched off his girlfriend and watched TV. Then the winter came, and the grasshopper died, and the octopus ate all his acorns and also he got a racecar. Is any of this getting through to you?

What I meant was, do you just stare at the screen and record it or did you write a modifier to one of the mnet viewers floating about to record it into some statistics program, or a mix of the two.

No modification is necessary for anything. See my last post for a more complete answer.

Can you weight each individual play of a map by how many people joined that particular game? (i.e. did anyone actually play Arrival, or was it just hosted?)

or at least get an idea as to hosted games vs. games that were actually started, or games that were canceled out manually once they had begun.

I don't count games unless they start and have at least 2 people.

Edit: For your specific question, it looks like almost all of the arrival games only had 2 players. But then again, the average number of players for all of the games was only 3.3.

Why the hell is Melatonin so high on the list? That's odd; otherwise it looks about right.

Specifically, why are the OLD non-Second Quest versions of Melatonin, Duality, Wrath No More? and Mars Needs Women so high on the list?

I would have thought the answer was obvious. I wasn't really trying to make a point with this topic, just presenting facts. But I guess one could make the argument that people on the metaserver host bad maps. Shocking, I know.

Ha, I'm surprised I'm in the top 10 because I haven't played marathon in about a week.

That's awesome, Tim, but don't take a break. One can never play enough marathon!
