What is the DS_STORE file in the Windows folder that comes with a lot o the downloads and what does it do?

.DS_Store is an invisible file used (and automatically created) by Mac OS X to store information specific to that folder, like the position of icons.

Thank you.

Keep in mind, the majority of Marathon gamers are Mac users, so these files will be found abundantly in downloads. Pfhorrest is correct, however he missed one thing. The .DS_Store also stores the window size & location of window placement on screen. On Mac they're useful as the Finder will remember all organization values of files & folders. On Windows they're useless. Just delete them.

I said "...like the position of icons". Window position (and view settings, and so on) are other things stored in there too.

No, they're not.
Just delete them.
Instead, Mac users should delete them before uploading, or simply use the correct settings on the built-in zip utility to exclude them in the first place. That's the considerate thing to do.

Guys, Alpha is just being helpful by not reading and spreading misinformation. Can you please just leave him alone?

Logic tells me that because Marathon was originally a Mac game, most of it's user base will be Mac users. If not, then tell me, what hardware do you run?

The built-in archive utility for OS X has no such feature. Only third-party utilities such as the CleanArchiver can do that. They can also be removed by doing the "rm" command in the Terminal.

Treellama runs the hardware for most of the users, so this is an excellent question.

WELL Treellama?

Damn it wrk, that wasn't my point. The point was just because Treellama runs PC (or whatever) doesn't mean we all do. Marathon was a Mac game, therefore most users are (or should be) Mac users.
Besides, PC gamers are arrogant fat ass loudmouths with no life & absolutely no respect for classics (something which Marathon happens to be). Why on earth would they play Marathon? They're too busy cheating in Battlefield or blaming foreign people for ruining gaming. If you don't have the latest GPU & games, you're lame in their eyes.

Uh, OK? I don't think anyone was saying that all users use PCs. Congrats on your extremely coherent and well thought out point though.

I hope you get the irony of telling others what type of computer they should be using.

NETMAPS ARE FUCKING WORTHLESS, GET OVER IT!

If a person dives in a vat of radioactive shit and I tell him his chances of getting cancer are extremely high, does that mean I'm forcing him to develop cancer?
I'm not forcing anyone to get a Macintosh, just saying it only makes logical sense for most Marathon gamers to be Mac users because of it's history as a Mac exclusive game.

I mean, I can't dispute this from an orthodox perspective, but when one does not enjoy mararthon—
  • gameplay
  • scenarios
  • maps

  • developers

Who says I don't love it, if I didn't love it I wouldn't be here putting up with your shit. I only bring up the development topic because I wish to improve Marathon. Besides, even if I hated it, where else would I go?

It's 2016, therefore you should be using a real computer.

An old Mac is still a Mac, Wrk.

Nope, that's not where I was going.

"It's 2016, therefore you should be using a real computer." You probably find that statement to be stupid and annoying, right?

"Marathon (1995ish) was a mac game, therefore all current users (2016) should be using macs." Everyone that didn't think the first quote was annoying will find this to be equally stupid and annoying.

You get all bitchy when people give you shit about your computer, but you're doing the same thing in reverse. I was just pointing that out. Carry on.

I'm not focing you to get a modern computer, just saying it only makes logical sense for most people in 2016 to have computers based on architecture that has been supported in the last decade.

Now if there were only some sort of download statistics showing what platform downloads Alephone the most...

I'm sure you checked that before making your claim, right?

Why that'd be nice. Perhaps someone could implement such a feature, you know, If it doesn't take up too much of your free time.
