it's like any of south and central america - colonization killed opressed and exploited the native population until it became less profitable to maintain rule directly. Then people who haven't governed them selves for a damn long time have to learn how to do it, often fucking things up royally for a long time (or just fighting for power like in colombia or equador). All the while "first world countries" are controlling all intrests in the country like they did before.
