Sweet!
Have you drawn the black vertical line after rendering the image? It's seems as if it lacks both highlighting and shading there.

Some of these logos look good large, but I can't help but wonder what some of them (especially the 3d types) look like when they are scaled down. For instance, phorrest's beveled logo looks really good at the size he made it, but it's less cool when scaled down.

How about a Marathon symbol with the Aleph number in the middle of the center circle.

Yes that is technically Aleph Naught.
I just needed an image of the actual symbol.

Also, AWESOME logo Arne.

Here are some more variations.
[attachment=4603:3D_symbo..._3_small.png][attachment=4604:3D_symbo...ll_alpha.png][attachment=4607:3D_symbo..._small_W.png]

As you can see, these turned out pretty dark. The images above are rendered with perfect 'clean' reflections, with no scattering. I rendered it a second time with scattered reflections, which you can see in the next row. This is so far the only way I've been able to brighten the shape without destroying the aesthetic. Scattered reflections increase the render time substantially, and even after cranking up the relevant quality settings I still had to render a 1024x1024 and scale it down so the pattern of black dots wouldn't be visible.

[attachment=4601:3D_symbo..._2_small.png][attachment=4602:3D_symbo...ll_alpha.png][attachment=4606:3D_symbo..._small_W.png]

The first image in this row is the one I posted before. I'll be the first to admit they look better on a black background than a white one, which is why I only posted it against black before.

For those that don't like green, I couldn't decide on an alternative color. So, take your pick.
Spoiler:
(or speed the animation up and have a Marathon-themed rave and/or seizure)

Oh, and the vertical slice at the bottom is part of the 3D model, not done in post-processing. If you look closely you'll notice it's reflected in the bottom of the central sphere. It just looks tacked on because it was made using a boolean difference function with a rectangular prism, and the camera is isolinear so there's no foreshortening. Smoothing that part out would still be worth trying, but it's been harder than it sounds.

Can you post the results when you use a camera with some perspective? It might make the gap look less jarring without the bevel that Pfhorrest objected too.
The only choice you have is the one I've already made for myself. Disappear into the darkness. Then make them fear the shadows.

This one is win.

Except for some reason it's looking like shit when I get rid of the background:
[attachment=4612:marathong.png]

Even with extra cleanup and a drop shadow and Save for Web to get rid of any gamma weirdness:
[attachment=4613:marathongz.png]

It looks great in Photoshop though. Odd.
